SYA Explores the Rich Traditions of Indian Classical Dance: Bharatanatyam and Kathak

SYA members were privileged to immerse themselves in the beauty and depth of two classical Indian dance forms through a unique, enriching cultural experience.

We began the day with a captivating Bharatanatyam session led by the talented Vishnupriya. With grace and clarity, Vishnupriya introduced us to the essence of this ancient dance form, which harmoniously weaves together bhava (emotion), raga (melody), and tala (rhythm). Through expressive storytelling, intricate footwork, and poised gestures, she brought to life the spiritual and artistic richness that defines Bharatanatyam. Her passion for the form was palpable, making even the introductory elements feel deeply meaningful. It was more than a dance lesson — it was an invitation into a centuries-old art that continues to inspire and move.

.

This was followed by an equally mesmerising Kathak session with RamanaSudhaa, who guided us through a journey of rhythm and grace. From foundational footwork (tatkaar) to elegant hand movements (mudras) and flow , we explored the structure and spirit of a dance style that finds its roots in ‘katha’, the Sanskrit word for ‘story.’ RamanaSudhaa’s warm and insightful teaching illuminated the devotional and emotive heart of Kathak, transforming the session into more than a physical activity — the experience connected us to Indian cultural heritage in a profound way.

By the end of the morning, we walked away not just having experienced new dance styles, but having touched the soul of traditions that have endured for generations.

It was a moving, joyful, and enlightening experience — one that we will carry with us with a greater respect and appreciation.
